When sourcing metal caskets in bulk, quality control is one of the most critical factors that separate reliable manufacturers from inconsistent suppliers. Defects such as uneven dimensions, poor welding, scratched finishes, loose hardware or wrinkled interior lining will lead to complaints from funeral homes and extra rework for your business.
This guide walks through the standard QC sequence for metal casket production from raw material to finished packaging. It is written for buyers, to help you understand what checks a responsible factory should perform, and what items you can verify during factory visits or third-party inspection.

Full QC Workflow for Metal Caskets
1. Incoming Material Inspection
Before production starts, the factory checks raw metal sheets, powder coating, lining fabric, hardware and seal components.
• Check metal sheet thickness against the agreed specification
• Look for surface scratches, dents, rust or oil contamination on steel sheets
• Verify fabric colour, texture and durability sample matches
• Confirm hardware material finish matches the approved sample
Buyer note: Ask to see the incoming material sample approval record. If raw material varies, every later step will carry quality risks.
2. Dimension Check
After laser cutting and CNC bending, panels and frames are measured.
• Length, width, height and lid opening clearance
• Diagonal measurement to ensure the casket is square, not twisted
• Matching dimensions for paired panels (left / right, lid / base)
• Custom size tolerance for OEM / private label orders
Buyer note: Uneven dimensions are the root cause of lids that do not close smoothly and gaps during assembly.
3. Welding & Assembly Inspection
Welding is a core structural step.
• Weld joints: no pinholes, cracks, cold welds or excessive spatter
• Frame alignment: all panels fit together without forced assembly
• Hinge function: lid opens and closes smoothly, no sticking or sagging
• Sealing groove fit for gasket installation
Buyer note: Poor welding often only becomes visible after coating. Good factories inspect welds before painting.
4. Surface & Coating Inspection
This is the most visible quality item for funeral home customers.
• Sanding: sharp edges, burrs and welding marks smoothed
• Powder coating / paint coverage: no bare spots, runs, bubbles or orange peel texture
• Colour consistency: match the approved colour sample under normal light
• No scratches, fingerprints or dust trapped in the finish
5. Interior Lining Inspection
Interior fabric greatly impacts the premium look.
• Fabric tautness: no loose wrinkles, sagging or uneven gathering
• Embroidery / logo placement: position, stitch quality and colour match
• Pillow, throw and blanket size and alignment
• Stitching integrity: no loose threads or skipped stitches
6. Hardware Function Check
Handles, ornaments, latches and corner fittings are tested one by one.
• Handles mount securely, no wobble
• Decorative hardware aligns symmetrically on both sides
• Latches lock and release properly
• Plating finish: no tarnish, peeling or discoloration
7. Final Overall Inspection
Full finished casket check before packing.
• Visual review from all angles for cosmetic defects
• Re-test lid opening, closing and locking
• Check all interior and exterior accessories are included
• Compare the finished unit against the pre-approved sample
8. Packaging QC
Packaging prevents damage during long ocean shipping.
• Protective foam / corner guards fitted on raised hardware and edges
• Plastic film wrapping to keep surface clean
• Carton or wooden crate structure suitable for sea freight
• Labelling matches order specification: model, colour, quantity, shipping mark
Metal Casket QC Checklist (For Buyers to Use)
You can send this checklist to your supplier or inspector for bulk orders:
✅ Incoming material: thickness, surface condition, sample match
✅ Dimensions & diagonal squareness
✅ Weld quality: no cracks, pinholes, spatter
✅ Frame & hinge function: smooth opening, proper fit
✅ Coating: colour match, no bubbles, scratches or bare metal
✅ Interior lining: stitching, embroidery, tautness
✅ Hardware: symmetry, secure mounting, smooth operation
✅ Final sample comparison
✅ Shipping packaging protection
What to Clarify With Your Manufacturer
1. Who performs the QC: in-house QC team, or only checked by production workers?
2. At which stage inspection happens: after cutting, after welding, after coating, final finish?
3. What is the factory’s rejection standard, and how defective units are handled?
4. Whether you can arrange pre-shipment inspection for your order.
Closing
Quality control for metal caskets is not a single final check. It is a sequence of controls running through every production stage. As a buyer, understanding these checkpoints helps you set clear expectations, reduce shipping surprises and build stable long-term OEM relationships with your casket manufacturer.
